Grass Roots Movement to Promote Books and Reading

Friday, January 27th, 2012

There is a campaign happening in our country that has nothing to do with political parties. It is called World Book Night and its purpose is to give away one million free paperback books across America to new or reluctant readers and those without easy access to books.

On April 23rd, 50,000 volunteers will give away one million books from a preselected list of 30 titles. Volunteers wanting to share their passion for books are currently being recruited on line.

CPSIA Update

Monday, August 1st, 2011

I thought all of Washington was focused on the debt ceiling, but today apparently the House passed a bill to amend the CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act). This legislation excludes ordinary books and paper based printed materials from third-party testing.

The bill is up for a Senate vote tonight. However, the Senate version does not have the same exclusion. It is expected that once the Senate passes the bill, the House will most likely offer a substitute amendment and send it back to the Senate to accept.

Keeping our fingers crossed that this goes through!

Recovered Books Used in Book Paper

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Cascades and Random House, Inc. have partnered to give a second life to the materials used for unsold hardcover and paperback books.

Cascades Recovery collects Random House’s returned books, while Cascades Fine Papers Group uses recovered fibers to manufacture Rolland Enviro100 Book, a recycled paper that is used for many of the publisher’s new titles.

Returned books from the bookselling marketplace published by Random House are sorted and fragmented. The raw materials then follow different streams: the sorted items are recycled into new products, while the rest is re-utilized in nonpaper-based applications.

Closing this loop with Cascades enables Random House to divert 4,487 tons of recyclable materials per year that otherwise would have been sent to landfill. Environmental savings of such an initiative are: 17,500 cubic yards of landfill space are saved, as well as more than 33 million kWh of energy, 131 million liters of water and 19,650 tons eq. of CO2.

McNaughton & Gunn is proud to offer Enviro100 Book and Print papers to our customers. Made with 100% Post Consumer Waste and FSC® Certified, it is a viable option for the enviromentally minded publisher.

McNaughton & Gunn Receives Environmental Award

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

McNaughton & Gunn has been recognized for outstanding achievement in environmental stewardship by Québec based, Cascades Fine Papers.

Cascades Fine Papers is renowned for its environmental commitment, demonstrated in the amount of recycled fiber used in the manufacturing of its papers as well as the biogas energy that powers its Rolland mill, also located in Québec.

For the initial round of awards, Cascades has chosen to recognize those companies that are making an extraordinary environmental impact in their daily operations. Through McNaughton & Gunn’s 2010 usage of Enviro 100, Cascades 100% recycled sheet, the company saved the following:

13,592 trees

15,886,931 gallons of water

5,282,279 pounds of CO2 emissions

2,032,846 pounds of waste

To further illustrate, the savings is roughly equivalent to nearly 400 football fields full of trees; a shower that lasts 7.6 years; and taking 400 cars off the road everyday for one year.

“McNaughton & Gunn has been and continues to be an industry leader in environmental stewardship. Environmental responsibility has been a cornerstone of our corporate culture and remains a strong focus today,” states McFarland. “We are honoured to be chosen for this award.”
